Infected eyeballs!

xclizzrd1024 Jun 19, 2005 09:04 PM

Help! I've had my green anole for over 3 years now, and just recently noticed a sort of white 'pus' in the corner of her eye. It has now 'grown' to cover half of her eye and is now in both eyes. Just this week, she started to keep her eyes closed, and when they are open, it seems that she has trouble seeing. A pet store told me to just put neosporin on them, but I don't know how good that is with eyes. Any suggestions I would greatly appreciate!

We will need to know what the environment is like!!!

There are 2 anoles all together. One male, one female. I found a 20 gallon hexagon tank for free awhile back, and they love all the space. I have 2 fake plants in there because they seem to like those better than real, a nice light and brown reptile bedding. The male doesn't have this problem

The type of lighting and temperatures would be helpful. Also, what is the humidity? Neosporin should help if the infection is bacterial. You can also use regular human eyedrops as well.

I cant seem to keep the humidity high enough, but I do mist the cage as often as I can to help with that. So neosporin should be safe on her eyes? Should I be worried about her infecting the other lizard?

I would quarantine her until the problem clears up. It is possible that the infection is contagious. Try using natural plants and, if that doesn't work, cover up to 1/3 of the cover with clear plastic. Don't cover the area under the lighting since plastic filters out virtually all of the UVB radiation and may pose a fire hazard under incandescent lights.

When you say cover 1/3 of the cover with plastic wrap, do you mean section off part of the tank? I'm sorry that I am confused. But I appreciate all the help!

The screened top of the tank -- it will help keep the moisture from evaporating.

ha duh. Sorry for a dumb question to an obvious answer. I just brought her out of the cage to try to put some ointment on her eyes and she sits around with her mouth open, and it looks like she's burping. Last time I had a lizard do that, it threw up and then died about 2 weeks later! She's been doing this for the past day or so too. Do you think she's dying? She hasn't eaten in about 4 days but is still plump. But she is pregnant as well. She has been drinking water. She will either let me water her or she will drink it off the plants. I just feel so horrible!

I know this is a little late but I had a 4 y.o old female anole have the same problem. Don't know how the eye got infected but it was pretty bad. The infected eye was nearly 3x's the normal size and closed. I tried everything I could think of to take care of the problem. I used neosporin, eye drops and even stuff for pink eye that was left over from when my son had it. Nothing worked and the little girl died about 2 weeks later with no obvious signs of clearing up no matter what I did.

The male never got the infection but died about 3 weeks after from what I assume was old age.

you said something about "burping" with the mouth open alot... for snakes that is OPEN MOUTH BREATHING which is a sign of respratory infection...i dont know if its the same for lizards!
