?Fire Belly? Roatan

StonedReptiles Jun 20, 2005 12:17 AM

I don't really know much about them. What exactly are they called and does anyone know the locale (im guessing maybe Roatan is a city). I picked this female up in July 2003 as a baby maybe 18 inches. The local pet store got her and didn't really know what she was so I picked her up for $100. I'm gonna try to get a male for her this year. Enjoy.

Roatan is an island off Honduras - its is also called Isla de Bahai. Dennis Sargent first named his Roatan locality specific boas - FireBelly Boas due to their bright orange bellies. Unfortantely Dennis sold off his original breeders a while ago. Several of those who got them, kept the lines pure, others interbred them with main land Hondurans ... which some folks are now also calling "Fire Bellies" as they also have a degree of brigt orange underbelly. Without knowing the exact bloodline its impossible & incorrect to call a particular snake a Roatan FireBelly ... just as it would be to call a snake a Corn Island, Crawl Cay or any other locality specific boa just because it looked like one but you didn't have any breeding data. Personally I think its highly unlikey (though not impossible of course)that you would pick up a pure Roatan in a pet store ...but stranger things have happened. Your best bet would be to get a mainland Honduran and match them up.

Cheers, John

Well I don't think anyone could have provided a clearer answer than that. Thanks again.

Hey, that's funny. Back in around 2000, I traded a local pet shop to baby nile monitors for two of those type boas that they got in...(they were too dark and were not selling). The bellies on bothe of them were totally orange. I had no idea at that time what they were, so I just sold them here on Kingsnake as normal Colombians. I wish I would have kept them now.

Down below I posted pics of my male hypo...he shows the orange belly but it is more marbled. Maybe it's normal for hypos? Although somewhere I read about Calicos...just wondering what this is from. Thanks Andy
