cutting back on food and dusting?

lele Jun 20, 2005 09:41 AM

Darwin seems to be eating a bit less these days. I usually feed him twice a day but his afternoon meal is often left uneaten or many crix left. Waiting for some silkies to hatch, so for right now he is getting just crickets and his salad, which he will nibble on a especially late in the day. He is growing great and healthy so I am not worried about him (11" and 90g - 4 1/2 months) but just wondering what the rule of thumb is re: age, food quantity, supplementing. He currently gets Ca/D3 4-5x/week and a multivitamin dust 2x/week. My crix are very well gutloaded.

thanks,
lele

Torque has slowed down on his food intake now that he is bigger too(3 months,13 inches, 140 grams). I'm still giving calcium 5x a week and vitamins 2 x a week and will until he is 6 month then cut the vitamins down to 1 x a week. I will probably keep giving him the same amount of calcium though, I think he is growing insanly fast and we want strong bones.

I'd say stick with your current scheduel,Darwin is doing good on it and even though he might not be eating as much, he's still growing and need the extra calcium/vitamins.

140g!!??!! Is it a german giant? I thought Darwin was growing in leaps and bounds (actually, he is). WOW!

I figured I would keep up the Ca b/c I know the issues with growth/bones, etc. but wasn't sure if I should cut back on food. I pretty much let him eat until he is full in a 15-20 minute period. When are they considered "adult" - at a year? When should I begin offering him more veggies than the 6-leggers?

thanks!
here is is in the middle of a shed (he is in a perpetual shed - lol!) showing his nice colors. He was sitting on top of Rosa Leigh's cage - she's my Chilean Rosehair

No German Giant, hes just a pig I feed as many silkies/roaches as he can eat 3 times a day plus 1/2 cup of salad, most of the time he eats all his salad too. Keep feeding mostly insects until 1 year of age, then you can feed mostly greens. Sometimes I give Torque just a salad so he learns to eat his greens too. I figure once he hits 8 months or so I will cut down to 2 insect feedings a day plus a really big salad.

I'm hoping next year I might be able to afford a younger sister of Darwins, I just love the translucents and my aunt has a big beautiful male hypo/snow with clear nails that would make an awsome mate for a trans.

Wow! That's a lot of food! and I thought Darwin was a piggy! My cham, Luna, goes off and on food often so I am not used to such a good eater - except for one of my kitties - lol!

He's in the middle of a shed so his belly does not look as transparent and is also not as noticeable as when he was younger, but he still has those beautiful dark eyes!

Beautiful pic of Darwin! Do you let him see the tarantula? 'Shudders' Ugh...I can't stand spiders. Don't hate them....they just give me the creepy crawlies.
I just can't get over how pretty Darwin is....I'm gonna come in the middle of the night and steal him!!

haha! Thanks, I'll tell him

Nah, Rose was in her hide, but it would be interesting to see his reaction. I had just placed him there near the window and he was in a cool pose. He would probably just cock his head and eyeball it!
