Too big a tank?

Jen C Jul 14, 2003 10:50 AM

Can too big a tank stress out a crested gecko. I have one currently in a 20 gallon tank but I have an unused 50 gallon tank that i was thinking of putting him in. He is about one and a half years old. At first I thought it might be nice to give him the extra room to roam around in but then i wondered if this would stress him out too much.

Thanks in advance

Jen

Jen,
It is not so much stress as it is harder for the animal to find food and water. Loose crix will easily disappear. Not a good thing considering they can chow down on fecal matter before your gecko eats them or they can die and become stagnant somewhere from excess moisture. If you want to keep him in the larger cage just make sure everything is easily found. Place a dog crock somewhere in the open under some branches to keep crix in; eventually he will learn where to go for them. You can use an aerator in a large water bowl so the movement of the water’s surface is easily seen. It is up to you .
