Rainbow prefers Fountain

aliaime Jun 20, 2005 01:19 PM

My 6 month old BRP prefers to stay nestled up inside the water fountain in her enclosure. Temps on the cool side with water fountain stays at 78 degrees. Temps on the warm side with a Terra Cotta pot and UTH stays at 82 degrees. Is that normal behavior for my BRP to remain in a cool environment rather than warm itself up?

Mine usually prefer it cooler than 78 - around the 74-76 range and rarely visit the warm side of their tanks unless they've eaten a big meal.

hey well i dont have a fancy waterfall, but my BRB loves spending time on the cool side, or infact he hates his heating pad. I live in a so. california apartment so right now during the summer temps i dont even need to use a heater, his cage stays mid 70's.

I see I'm doing the right thing from what you're saying. I'm trying to understand the BRP behavioral pattern.

aliaime,
...Your BRB and Hapkidoman and igywigie are all telling you something. Your snake stays in the coolest part of it's cage. Their snakes like temperatures in the mid 70s. Your snake may be spending all of it's time in the water trying to get cooler than it can in the cage you have provided. BRBs often do spend time in the water. It is usually not anything to worry about but snakes that have mites will also spend much time in the water.
Good luck,
Jeff

I'm realizing that my BRP really prefers the cool side of its enclosure. She doesn't necessarily soaks in her water dish, but remains inside her water fountain which is covering her water dish. She tends to come out at night to stretch out, but she is very shy when I gravitate towards her. I want her to be accustomed to me handling her, but I will wait when she is ready.
