egg incubation problem please help

XtremeXteriors Jun 20, 2005 04:29 PM

my friend is incubating some eggs so he asked if i would look at them cause something didnt seem right when i opened the container he had the eggs in a basket like thingy inside a container the temps were perfect and the humidity was perfect but the basket was sitting directly on the vermiculite and perlite mix and some of the water seeped up into the basket and the bottoms of the eggs seem waterlogged not moldy how bad is this hes gonna be devestated if he messed the eggs up it is his first clutch they are graylike in color on the bottom can this be fixed by double stacking the basket and trying to remove some of the excess water

Mine made it...but,i had discovered the problem within the first two weeks.
How long have his been cooking?

Here is a shot of mine,(still in the old eggbox).I had the "bright idea" to use rubberized shelf liner.(It sank!)

Here is what i did to correct the problem.(Thanks again JP )
(The pic above is actually of my second clutch)

In this shot not only can you see a few of the waterlogged eggs...It also shows how the perlite is actually floating above the water.Yet allows the humidity to travel throughout the eggbox.

It is used in commercial florescent lighting, and it is actually called "eggcrate". You can find it in a Home Depot or whatever home improvement chain you have near to you.

...and yes..it worked!
All eight hatched out,(this is number seven to come out).

Good luck with them.

He needs to remove the basket, and mix some dry vermiculite in with the wet until the vermiculite barely clumps (then remove any excess vermiculite to get it back to the right volume). I'd get rid of the basket if it were me and just put the eggs right on the substrate. I bet the eggs will dry out if they are not moldy.

Good luck!
