UVB and hatchlings

Dragonstale Jun 20, 2005 06:05 PM

Just wondering how everyone gets their hatchlings close enough to the UVB? I have mine in aquariums and if I set the UVB on top I don't think its close enough for the little guys to benefit. I have a simple setup with them on papertowels with a flat basking rock.

I'm not sure how high your setups are, but Zoo-med makes a Repti-Sun 10.0 which reaches much further then the old 5.0's, and other brands. I believe they reach as far as 20 inches away. I use those bulbs as well as stack 2 inch high patio blocks for them to bask on. My baby bins right now are 13 inches high.

They also make those mercury Vapor bulbs which throw UVB much further then regular fluorescent tubes. They cost a bit more, and give off heat as well as UVA/UVB.

If your intersted in purchasing the 10.0's www.lllreptile.com has a sale where if you buy 2 the 3rd is free.. It's comes out to being $17.99 per bulb

Hi..
I guess you could raise the basking spot....or invest in either a Repti-Sun 10.0 or a Mystic UVB bulb. Both of these put out much higher uvb than standard flourescents, thus you don't need to have them so close. 'Bout the only thing I can think of. Any pics of the little ones?

Thanks for the info. currently I have reptisun 5.0 and had heard of the 10.0 but a friend of mine told me stories of reptiles becoming ill from too much UVB, but I think I may try them out. I'll post some pictures of my adults and babies after work tonight! This is our first breeding and it's soooo exciting!

Dragons can't be sick from too much UVB....the best UVB bulb only produces a fraction of what the actual sun produces, and in the wild dragons are out in the real sun most of the day.
