Free roaming Ig Questions

t-type Jul 14, 2003 11:27 AM

I was considering getting an iguana but i have a few questions first.
1)If i got an iguana and he was a free roamer can you potty train him or put him in something that will stimulate him to poop right then or do you just have to deal with the mess?

2)Im planning on moving in a year or two would my iguana be able to adjust to his new home well or would there be problems?

3)Do i have to cage a new iguana at first or can i let him freeroam right away?
(if not how long do i have to wait?

Thanks for your time

Well i had my ig in a cage when i 1st got him and now he is running wild around the house . I had him trained to go poop in the tub everyday but once i let him roam around the house he found a spot that he likes more then a tub so I laid some news paper in that area and he only goes there. Every ig will need some time to adjust to a new place if you move. The same goes if you have him caged 1st and then let him free roam. Personally I think it worked out great for me that I had him in cage 1st and got him tamed somewhat before I let him run lose around the house.

I let my ig free roam right away, but some people sat this is not a good idea. We adopted him from a lady that kept him in a 50 gallon tank so he wasn't used to a lot of space to move in. For the first 2 days, my ig was exploring & sort of on the edge, he wouldn't let us get too close to him without trying to whip. But after a while, he got use to us & our place (we have a 750 sq foot apartment & not a lot of furnishings, so he can't get into much trouble here). We've had him since St Patricks Day of this year & now he is really sweet, spoiled & funny, he has an awesome personality.

About the potty training issue, I had trouble with this at first, I tried putting him in the tub every morning but 1) that got tiring & 2) he would only poop in there 3 out of 5 times, so we gave up on that. We then found out he liked to poop on the tile in the kitchen or by the front door so we put newspapers down & now he poops on the papers 9 of 10 times, the other times he gets lazy & poops on the couch, but thank god for OxyClean!
