Non-Herp Lense Question...

Doug89 Jun 20, 2005 11:26 PM

Tonight there was a big full moon out and i thought to my self, "What is the best lense for taking pictures of the stars and moon and such?" Well anybody have any answers to help? I tried looking through my standard 50mm but it was too small. My 135mm looked promising (if it wasnt busted). Thanks for your help!

When photographing the moon, you have to divide your lens focal length by 109 to determine the size of the moon on the 35mm slide/negative. So a 100mm lens gives a 1mm moon on the slide.

Since a 35mm film frame is 36x24 mm (I believe) and you want an image to occupy much of the frame it needs to be around 1/4 the size of the frame or at least 6 mm tall. Therefore you need a 650mm lens to get that kind of shot.

Of course, with digital, you have the advantage of cropping from a larger image. That's what I did in this shot of the moon taken with a 100-300 (35mm equiv = 150-450) lens at the 450 mm setting. I also underexposed the picture by 3 stops to make sure I could see the details on the moon surface and that the sky would be completely black -

And here's a link to a website with some tips -
