Where to look in Central Texas??( continued from below)

wesss Jun 20, 2005 11:54 PM

Sorry I didnt give you guys enough info to begin with.I have mainly been looking in Bell, Mclennan, and Coryell counties. Bassically anything around Waco, Temple, Killeen areas. I am not really looking for anything particular, just anything differant from the snakes I usually find on a regular basis like Prarie Kings, Diamondbacked Watersnakes, Ribbons, Garters, Western Diamondbacks, and lets not forget the most common snake I come across the Texas Rat.I would like to locate a good place to find Bull snakes which I have only found 1 live one so far. Also I would like to find a copperhead wich I have never came across in the wild. Any info will be much appreciated.

Sorry - I have no informtion for you because I am in California, but I am headed to Belton, TX for the 4th of July. I'm pretty sure that is in the same area you were describing in your post. I never see those snakes you were talking about and I told my nephews we would go see what we could find while I was there. They have never seen snakes outside of a petshop. I know we will have fun looking no matter what, but I would love to be pointed in the right direction. Ideally we will find something without venom, but with some bite.

I'll let you know if I come across any copperheads! - man that would be cool!

good luck,

Jake

I know that out to the northwest of Waco there is an area of grassland that people sometimes roadhunt for Massassaugas. If they are there, there might be bullsnakes as well.

Yes belton is right down the road from where I lived in TX,I am currently living in Colorado but still get down there a couple times every summer. I have had pretty good luck in the belton area, just cruise backroads close to the lake and you should see some reptiles. If you happened to get some rain the chances get alot better. If you dont have any luck there I would try the roads around Mother Neff State park and oglesby, but be carefull last summer I saw close to 20 diamondbacks in that area!

Thanx for the info about the grassland next time Im down there Ill probably go look for it.

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HERPING TO EVERYONE!

About 25 years ago, I worked for the Summer at the Snake Farm in New Braunfels. I hunted nearly every night in the area and probably only saw a total of 20 snakes (mostly decays)all Summer long. Good Luck.
