Jaw deformities in Sulcatas

herprefuge Jun 21, 2005 02:35 AM

Hi, we run a small scale reptile rescue for local animals. Last year we took in two small sulcatas that had not been taken care of properly.
Our main concern for them is that one has a major undershot jaw that comes up to his nostrils. The other is getting a nasty overshot jaw.
Do we need more roughage or so for them to eat to grind down the jaws or at this point do we need to grind them down for them?
They both eat very well and it does not appear to hinder them at all since both eat like hungry hippos and are very active.
We have been unable to find much on this subject on the net.
Thanks for any help

Sounds like they could need trimming. I'd say take them to a Vet who has experience in this area.

I agree. It is unusually for this species to need trimming, and the previous poor care probably led to conditions that resulted in the misalignment of the jaw. A vet would discuss this with you, trim the beak, and check to see if the initial problem needs further attention.
