....Sonoran tree badgers...

regalringneck Jun 21, 2005 06:49 AM

....normally these beaded-badgers are rooting about in holes like their mammalian counterparts...
While I have read about climbing monsters & have seen them up a few times on boulders...this is the 1st one Ive actually seen in a tree & it was just outside my office...ah but one of the many pleasures working in the Sonoran desert.....
The eggs & mammal pups produced this spring insures plump tails on these monitors...

Cheers, RxR

Lat, my good man...what pray tell..would a cinctum monster be doing in a mesquite tree in tooscon??? The monsters from the old pueblo are comparatively....butt-nungly!
The beast I posted is typical of the Phx area
Specifically; that one was ~ 35 miles N of downtown.

...Can you believe even beadeds such as yours are illegal here in Az.! The prohibition on the genus here is rediculous & meanspirited. My beloved AG&F cant find a gun to "prohibit under the guise of public safety" heck you can hunt deer w/ your AK-47...but possess a non-native venomous...whhoo-hooo...thats gotta be a crime against the public order...
Yes I know that rd. very well, its a dandy view & decent campsite up top. Fires have recently torched that area...
I'll call ya again...RxR

Thanks, I love beadeds, Gilas too, but horridum has always been my first love. Hopefully the regs will ease up out there, I have heard of infrequent granting of permits for the private citizen out there under VERY strict guidelines. Maybe they were just rumors...
I saw a nice tigris up on the "radar" road one night, it is a pretty area and they got a great coffee shop in town!

Lat-man...

...A dim bulb flickered...indicating my harddrive could finally process the data!....a Tiger on the Radar rd...???? Hhmmmm, velly interesting...& possiblyly a NE locality record!
In any case it should be properly documented.
Do you have a digital 1:24000 map you could plot the site on? If not I could send you a jpg & you could mark it up. Anychance the snake or a jpg of it is still around? If it is captive..it should be earmarked for eventual deposit in the UoA or ASU collection.
The recent fires on Humboldt probably are a good thing for los tigres...but alas my beloved Az Blacks are probably bummed...

Standingby.....RxR

Yeah, I was sort of shocked when I saw it too, I kept it for photos and released it a few nights later, I think it was a male. I have photos in situ and I may even have GPS'd the spot but I remember exactly where it was on the road and can show you on whatever image you want to send my way. It seemed right on the edge of their range according to what I could find so it just seemed like a lucky night for me.
