Bull Snake Behavior

luxury_of_tears0 Jun 21, 2005 07:12 AM

First of all, I'll be honest with you guys. I'm not really intrested in bull snakes (well slightly but I've never read any large ammount of literature on them and don't plan on owning one). But I have a question b/c someone else related bull snakes (and indigo sankes) to the snake that I was inquiring about with them. Can you describe the 'personality' of a bull snake in greater depth than something like, "It's aggressive untill tamed." Do they tend to try to move off of you a lot or are constantly moving about? Any other info will be appreciated as well. Thanks

Well lux, it's like this-- I have twelve Bullsnakes from a year old to three years old, and I've owned a couple others for more than 8 years. I guess over a thirty year period I've had a hundred or more. Focusing on the twelve I have now, the best I can say is don't expect generalizations!!!! The really neat thing to say about keeping Bulls, or any other member of the genus Pituophis (pines and gophers) is that they run the gamut in their personalities. I have a couple that are as flighty as can be when you hold them but have never tried to bite. I have a couple that are sedate as you hold them yet will tag you if you aren't on top of it. I have four that will bite you as soon as you open their enclosures. I have a four foot monster that will nail you everytime. And I have a four footer that I would trust with young kiddoes. As to taming, I've had a number that would never tame and that's fine with me. The only thing I will say for sure is that as soon as you make a generalization one or more will come along and prove you wrong!!! If you want a really tame snake get a corn! That's my $ .02!
