update on skink losing weight & a question

buffysmom Jun 21, 2005 09:55 AM

Well, the Pancur did it. He's eating like a horse now & gaining weight

My question is, how do you get your skinks to eat their veggies? I find mine will eat all the bugs & worms I can give him, but he'll let his veggies sit there all day w/o touching them. Is a high protien diet bad for him & if so, what do I do about it?

Well, its not that its "bad", but variety in their diet is deffinetly much better to balance nutrition. I've found a few tricks that may induce them to eat their greens. If your blueys have a sweet tooth (a bit like mine), try mixing honey or mushed fruits with the greens throughoutly. bananas are good, since most go "bananas" (pun intended) 4 em. You may also try low protein dog food/cat food, or raw eggs mixed with the greens. Be sure to chop the veggies to small pieces so everything is mixed, and the bluey will not be able to pick the proteins. Adding a few mealworms, earthworms, slugs/snails on top of the greens may also entice the blueys, and they will also have to gobble some greens with the insects in the process. As a last resort, you may also "cook" the eggs (just heat em, so they go solid, kinda like a veggie omelet, no cooking oils, grease, butter or anything please, just plain heat em up). And dont forget their supplements. Good luck

Great news that your bluey is eating better!

To entice your skink to eat veggies, try squash. Almost any squash is loved by them - and they love it baked (we place in microwave for cooking and cool). Scoop the squash out of the skin and cut that up and mix greens and other veggies with it - and spoon it onto a plate. Watch what happens.

We have coaxed the pickiest of eaters with squash. Another secret weapon is baked yams...

I'll try those suggestions. I've tried the egg thing before & he likes raw egg but isn't so into the cooked egg. He rarely gets raw egg w/o veggies mixed in, hehehe, tricky mom I'll try the squash thing, too. I bet he'll love that.

He's really been enjoying chasing crickets around his house, & I've gotten a real kick out of watching him, but I do worry a bit about cricket parasitatization. He just recovered from a case of worms (nematodes, actually), which I think he got from eating snails. So I don't want him to get cricket parasites, like I've struggled w/ in my geckos in the past. Have any of you had this problem w/ crix?
