Alterna, Mexicana, and Getula

McCloskey Jun 21, 2005 10:45 AM

Do non-getula kings have the same properties as getula? What I mean is this - getula kings have that look to them, the thick neck and body, like the snake version of a linebacker. But mexicana, for example, look to me almost like rat snakes, or milks. At least that's the body type they have. I thought that getulas had that extra mass so they could overpower other snakes, and it seems like without it they wouldn't necessarily be able to eat other snakes their size. So, I'm asking whether the thinner bodied king snakes are able to prey on other snakes the way getula can? Also, are they resistant to venom like getula?

I think most mexicana are lizard eaters for the most part. I wouldn't put it past them to be snake munchers but most seem to use the "wall squish" as opposed to true "in your face" constriction like the getulas. Don't know if they have immunities to venom but would think it very possible living alongside all those desert rattlers and trans pecos copperheads!
