SDZ diet:- how to mix?

wreckwriter Jun 21, 2005 11:19 AM

I hear a lot about the SDZ diet but can't seem to find specifics. Can someone please give me a specific recipe/instructions for making it in a quantity suitable for one average sized Colombian tegu?

Thanks much!

just scroll down the pade. there is a thread on it from last week

wreckwriter Jun 21, 2005 01:35 PM

Yea but.. the most specific info in that thread is "10lbe of turkey-90 grame of bone meal - two centrum muti vit. "

I was hoping for a bit more of a walk-thru

I'm with you, i've been looking for a good guide for it

tegulevi Jun 21, 2005 03:45 PM

OKay i make the mixture which you already know the ingredients to. you mix it all up and make like 2 or 3 inch balls out of it. like meatballs. bag them up and freeze them. thaw as needed depending on th size of your tegu. you can substitute the strawberry's with other fruits like bananas or mangos. Russ says to stick the one meal instead of calcium powder. but i am still torn on that decision after talking to the breeder i got mine from who has been using phosforus free rep-cal for like 10 years with no problems. phosforus can lead to kindey problems for them.

i hope this is what you needed

The info I got Was from Stella St Peirre. She had told me that she had to take the SDZ off her web sight , because they kept getting phone calls about sick and unheathy tegus. T%his was a result of changing the formula. If it is not broken why try and fix it?(just trying to be funny). It has been proven to work this way. I only feed rodents , fruit sented with blended hard bioled eggs, and king worms now. Before you use the rep cal instead of bone meal ,find out what the difference is between the two .Amount of calcium ect.Ps The SDZ formula is the same nutritional value as a rodent. They have done the study on it allready.Good luck Russ

my guy is Colombian, very picky eater. He won't eat fruit and turns his nose up at mice better than half the time. He love that ZuPreen monitor diet junk but I don't think its the best so want to get him on something else.

I assume the turkey is ground, right? What type of centrum vitamins? They make a bunch, does it matter? Finally, where does one get bonemeal? Is that a grocery store item?

Thanks.

russ1066 Jun 22, 2005 09:22 AM

Raw turkey, Just the normal multi Vit.

russ1066 Jun 22, 2005 09:23 AM

I got mine from Whole foods. You could do a search on yahoo.

OK, thanks for your help Russ!

Was hoping I wouldn't have to make the long trek to Whole Foods but GNC didn't have bone meal and Publix doesn't even have lean ground turkey except in little tiny packages. Their regular ground turkey is nowhere near lean.

Russ, do you remember what area/department of Whole Foods the bone meal was in? The one we have is a huge place.

Thanks again,

Tom

Ground turkey is all pretty "lean". I wouldn't worry about that too much. It's not like in the wild they have a personal nutritionist telling them not to eat the fatty critters. As for bone meal, just order it. There's a million places online to order bone meal. I live in a somewhat rural area and it's often just easier to have it delivered to your door (and cheap). I bet you can even find it on Ebay. Just do a google search for it. I buy it in 10 pound packages.

wreckwriter Jun 28, 2005 09:27 AM

Yea, I know you're right, in the wild they eat all sorts of "unhealthy" stuff!

The wife wants to go to Whole Foods anyway to get dandelion greens for the uro so will try there first, if I can't find it will order. I just hate waiting for anything!

wreckwriter Jun 22, 2005 08:58 AM

One more thing... is the turkey raw or cooked in some way?

tegulevi Jun 22, 2005 11:01 AM

Raw ground turkey. wal-mart or any grocery should have it.

I am looking into the whole rep-cal vs. bone bmeal thing before i switch. I think it was probably not mbd but kidney disease caused by phosforus, which is in most calcium products, thats why i use the pink label

ea7770 Jun 22, 2005 11:14 AM

Raw but make sure to freeze it first to cut down on any salmonella or other nasties.

tegulevi Jun 22, 2005 02:00 PM

Well russ i have to thank you for shedding some light on the rep-cal stuff. I did a forum search from 2004 and found the message from st. pierre and I will for sure make my next batch with bone meal. The problem is today while I was looking for this my fiance' was at home making another 2lb batch with the rep-cal. will another batch of this harm him?

Mikal Jun 22, 2005 02:48 PM

If that's all you've been feeding it, I'd assume another batch wouldn't be that critical unless health issues are already visible.

Mikal

russ1066 Jun 23, 2005 12:24 AM

I would not use it . n. 2lbs of turkey is only about 7.00 $. I spent alot more on rodents that would come out to the amouint as 2 lbs of turkey meat. good luck Russ

wreckwriter Jun 22, 2005 02:05 PM

How are you guys measuring the bone meal? I don't have a scale that reads in grams....

ea7770 Jun 22, 2005 02:10 PM

You can buy a digital scale that'll weigh grams for under $10 on Ebay. Just type in "digital scale". You'll find tons of 'em.

wreckwriter Jun 22, 2005 02:53 PM

That's all? Thanks much.
