Eastern Ribbon Snake envenomation???!?!

LaHerper Jun 21, 2005 01:02 PM

I also posted this on the garter & ribbon snake forum....

This morning i was walking along the bayou as i usually do looking for herps, well this morning i found an eastern ribbon snake. As i was holding him he began to chew into my index finger and held on for about 2 minutes. After he let go and i walked back to my house my finger was itching pretty bad and then had some localized swelling (a whelp about the size of a dime). I think i've heard of this before but im not sure...and really caught my interest so i thought that I'd post it on here.

also about 20 minutes later most of the symptoms were gone except for some soreness/tenderness in my forearm... I've been bitten by countless ribbon snakes and have never experienced symptoms such as these... they seem more common to mildly venomous rear-fangs

Hi:

Sounded more like an allergic reaction than an "envenomation" I suggest you don't let them bite you and carry some Benadryl just in case.

yea i know that it wasnt an actual envenomation but still i have never been affected by a bite before and i have also heard about coulibrid saliva causing these types of reactions...

Allergies can come out of no where and kill you right quick. Please becareful in the future. When out on field trips I always carry Benedryl & and Epi-pen.

Good Luck,
Al

Banded Kraits at Thai Redcross Snake Farm, docile by day but still highly venomous.
