Question About Breeding Behavior and Copulation

TheDrew1 Jun 21, 2005 02:31 PM

So i have my breeder male that is a prolific breeder and i just bought a breeder female. Now that she is settled in, i have decided to go ahead and breed her to my male. My male shows a lot of interest at first because he immediately darkens his beard and bobs his head. And the female is submissive with her bowing and arm waving. So that all goes on and he gets on top of her and bits the skin on the back of her neck but then that is it. They just sit there until one of them moves. Its not like he gets her into position or anything he just sits but he doesnt start the copulation. I dont know what i can do to induce this behavior, any ideas? Ive decided to leave them alone with the cage covered up for a day then do it again another day, because he doesnt like me watching, he starts to bob his head at me.

also, should i be putting the female in the males cage or the other way around? Because it is like that all the male is doing is just stating that this is his territory. He will just sit in the basking spot and watch them and if they do anything weird he starts to bob his head again and chase them around. Maybe this wont happen if i put them in the female's cage instead.

Anyone have any advice for me?

Thanks

Well...I haven't bred as of yet, but everything I've read indicates that the male should be placed in the female's cage...or they should meet on neutral territory.
Also...just curious, how long did you quarantine the female?

What do you mean my quarintine?

3 months and 3 clean fecals is the standard quarantine period(ie kept seperate)for new reptiles into your care before exposing them to existing ones, you need to be sure the new one is healthy, free from parasites before exposing your existing healthy animal to the new one or you'll have 2 sick dragons. Also, any male or female to be bred should have a fecal prior to be mated(even if you've had her forever) and a check-up by a vet is always a good idea for females as well.

From the way you posted I assumed you hadn't followed the proper quarantine procedure. It's very important. I won't be redundant, as everything was pretty much stated before me.
I hope everything turns out ok for your dragons.
