looking for turtle not sure what species i want.have a question.

MANAKAWARI Jun 21, 2005 05:02 PM

i have a medium sized terrarium with a water feature.the water area is an ok size and i am looking to add a baby turtle to it,size and available space is very limited so i need to find a species that will be small.what is the smallest species available in the pet trade and exactly how small are the babies?.the smaller the better!he will be living with other animals, some of them quite small,so i need a very small hatchling in order to keep everyone in one piece.are there any turtle hatchlings out there that are 1" or under?and ones that wont grow to more than 3".that would be ideal but i may be able to stretch it to 4"if so please let me know who is selling them, thanks.

This turtle does not exist. Sorry. You really shouldn't mix them with other things anyway. It is a recipe for disaster.
Anyway - what you are looking for (a three inch turtle) does not exist.

The closest you can get is a Musk turtle (Snernotherus odoratus). The hatchlings are tiny, and the adults carapace length can reach about 5 inches.

Please describe your "water feature" in more detail. Musk and other turtles need specific habitat requirements and just cant be put somewhere just because it has water. Also, you should not mix other animals with turtles.

I would first do a little research about turtles before deciding you want to purcahse one.

A turtle that may work for you as far as size would be a texas map. They do need alot of water and probable don't care about the land except to bask. They are shy so it wouldn't want alot of traffic around cage

As Honuman said earlier...there's no sutible turtle that will only grow 3 inches. Even small Maps and Spotted pond turtles will reach five or six inches. Also, you really need to describe your habitat more to get any real help to find a sutible turtle. What size tank is it? what do you mean by the water area being "ok"? Even if you find a small turtle and it seems to be working out, you just may just get home to find fish heads floating in the water and a very happy turtle (they eat fish). My map swims with the oscars, knife and other freshies I have in a fifty-five gallon. It's a risk I take. Don't get too attached to your fish if your adding turtles. Consider starting up a little twenty long aquarium (the recommened size for most smaller turtles).
