thermometers

goalielocks Jul 14, 2003 12:43 PM

I was just wondering what the difference is between the kind of instant read thermometer you can buy for reptiles and the kind used for checking for fevers. Could you use a medical instant read thermometer to chack enclosure temps?

First, there's the non-contact infrared thermometer like the ones made by Raytek and the ones sold by herp stores like Pro Exotics. They have come down in price and work great for handheld checks in different areas of the enclosure.

Second, I use an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer sold at target for $9.99. It works great, and they're cheap enough I can have one on each enclosure and rack I've got.

The stick on thermometers sold for herp enclosures don't work too well with leos, because you need to measure the ground surface, not the air temps. Not sure about the human thermometers you're talking about, but those two above work great for me.
