hi - i found your website and also a few entries you left on kingsnake.com and figured you would be best to ask a few questions about my dumeril to. I had Peaches and Otis together in the end of September of 2004. I saw them "together" and removed Otis a week later. I know it's coming closer to Peaches due date and have noticed some odd activity. First and most important... she has small amounts of blood in her urates. But she leaves LARGE puddles of clear urine with the urates. I've seen her consume large amounts of water at times. These blood stains happen almost every other day. She's had good bowel movements where everything has appeared healthy and nothing out of the ordinary. I've cut her food supply down so she hasn't "pooed" much since being pregnant but each one is healthy. She's in a large neodesha (i think that's how you spell it) cage and prefers to lay on the cool end of her cage refusing the hide box on the warm end. Today she's been very hyper, cruising around, stretching out and it seems as if she wants out because she keeps stretching upward to the ceiling. I've been wanting to take her to the vet to get this blood thing checked out but the vet is kinda far and i don't, by any means, want to stress her out with the travel. My vet won't do any kind of tests without seeing her. I HAD to take her out of her cage 2 weeks ago to clean and she was very protective of her hind end and of her cage. Since she pooed (2 weeks ago), she has become darker in color. She did a full shed about 3 weeks ago and looks like she may be in shed again, but like I said, has looked this way for 2 weeks. I've asked a few breeders and get different answers each time on why she's peeing blood and was wondering if you had any suggestions or ever experienced this. As far as I know, she is almost 5 years old, about 6 1/2 ft long and has never been bred before. This is my first time breeding boas so I need all the help I can get. Like I said, I've asked many experienced people and have done a lot of research and I can't get ends to meet here. Other than this mess, she is very healthy, still has an appetite, has turned down food only a few times, has good weight on her (although today she appears thinner) and is frustrating the hell out of me. Please help me.
Thanks so much
Sara

If you only had them together for a week back in September, that is an extremely small window for a male to get a girl going. Sperm retention aside, it has been quite a long time for her to be gravid at this point.

I'll let Jason offer his expertise as far as the potential birth of Peaches, as I have a different thought on what is going on.

Bloody stool or a discharge can be caused by Coccidia, a single celled parasite that acts(and is transmited) similar to some nemotodes(internal parasites)- from food or water sources. On their own it is easy to fix but these orginisms can cause very serious secondary bacterial infections if they are untreated. I highly reccommend that you take a stool sample to a vetrinarian and have a fecal float done.

Now, as long as she still appears healthy... no need to "freak out". Coccidia is very common. Probably as common as nemotodes. However, I would get some work done on her asap.

Good luck-

Matt,
Thanks for your input. Like I said, I need all the help I can get. The reason I kept Peaches and Otis together for only a week is because he's a sure shot. He was bought from a kid who put him in his friend's female dumeril's cage the night before a show because there was no where else to put him and he knocked her up just in that night. Or so I was told. Otis didn't hesitate to make his courtship with Peaches at all although she was playing hard to get at first.
If Peaches doesn't spit these babies out by July 7th, I'm going to take her to the vet reguardless of stressing her out. She's my pride and joy and I'm not going to let anything happen to her and if it is some kind of parasite, I don't want my whole snake room infected (it probably already is). I'll read up on that stuff a little more and see what matches up.
Thanks a lot
Sara

Id take her into the vet, ive never had bleeding myself but have known people who have and would tend to think that its more related to her being gravid, a one or two week window is not by any means a small window as Matt said she very well may have taken, if she did it could be related to some kind of infection but I would tend to think it would be more related to her being gravid I would take her in and have her checked out, if the doc wants to put her on meds make sure they wont complicate anything various meds can be detrimental to a gravid boa, it could be internal bleeding, shes drinking alot more to try and compensate and its passing and some of the blood is coming out with be gental and shell be fine throw the transport, when you pack her do it so shes nice and snug in a box so she doesnt slide and shell be fine, sorry it took so long I only get on the net once in a while

Thanks for the input Jason. I took Peaches to the vet yesterday. They took 3 xrays of her and no babies. Atleast they were not visible where I think they would be seeing they did a full length body shot of her. What they did find is her tail is kinked twice at the bottom. I have no clue how that happened. The doc wants me to get a sample from her to figure out what's going on with the blood. She's in shed still so I guess I'm gonna wait until she's done shedding to get a good sample. She does have a mass in her belly that we are assuming is just left over poo so we'll see what happens. As far as being gravid, she shows no swelling right now and hasn't been on her side at all so who knows what is going on. Otherwise, the doc absolutely loved her and said she's in extremely good health aside from this kink and blood. He said she may be acting this way because she "thinks" she is pregnant. Who knows - I think she just likes to drive me nuts. But anyway - thanks for your help and I hope I can come to you again with questions. I guess I have to aim for babies this season around and drive myself crazy for another year. Lol.

Thats cool, im glad you took her in anytime there bleeding like that it is cause for concern. a buddy of mine lost a hog and it bleed like that she was gravid and lodged up, from trying to push them out she ripped something and bleed internally, Now the kink could be due to someone ramming a prob in her when she was younger, ive dealt with that a couple times they dont prob the same as colombians and some people get a little rough thinking the snake is pinching down. as far as the xray looking for young I think thats a waste of time, we tried that could never find anything in xrays(atleast with boas, pythons we could find eggs) boas we had to do sonogram I think its called? Same thing that use for women and you have to have someone good who can find the right spots because they dont go through scales very well, but it doesnt sound to me like she took, I got one female here that took I had intended to give here the year off because she was a little thin from a alrge litter last year, cleaning cages stuck her in with a pair got busy with something else and forgot a couple days later pulled her out and now shes swelling laying belly up etc Im yhoping shell absoarb them because she really needed the year off but I got a feeling she drop, anyway best of luck I hope all turns out well Jason
