beta carotene affecting colors

username854 Jun 21, 2005 07:24 PM

i really think that chuckwallas with a higher amount of beta carotene in there diets willo develope a lot more orangish red colors, i have heard other people say it, and recently i noticed my chucks developing more orangish red colors than they had when i caught them, after adding carrots to thier diet. there diet mainly consist of dandelions, spinach, romaine, carrots, and squash. they seem to love carrots and they eat allot of them, even if they are not hungry enough to eat the greens they always finish the carrots. and after feeding them shredded carrots for severall weeeks they have been developing allot more color.now there are other factors that may be triggering the coloring but let me know if any of you have noticed this or agree with me.

I never noticed any huge differences. I would supplement their diet with powdered supplements with beta c, and also I would use color enhancing fish foods to gut load crickets. Of course you would just sprinkle this on Chuck food. Spirulina is supposed to have good color enhancing properties and is healthy.

I think genetics plays the biggest role, and the overall health of the lizard. Going against my own beliefs, I've never had a captive bred collared exhibit the same outstanding colors as a wild lizard has. BUT, I have collected awesome collareds and had them retain their colors. Lizards collected in the same vicinity as babies never got the color...ahhh things to ponder :O)

for all my salad eaters, uro's, chucks, black agamas, and recentley shield tail agamas, as well as offering it to collard lizards. I also eat them and have not become MUCH brighter, LOL

I have not noticed any out of the ordinary brighter colors, but then I find them all so very pretty and colorful as is, ehehhehe

I feed them carrots, as I think besides the fact they love them, they are healthy!
