Could I get some opinions from people with experience proving out Het Pieds?

RyanT Jun 21, 2005 07:45 PM

I have these 2 50% het males that were produced by Ralph Davis. One is an '02, the other an '03. I know the "markers" talked about on het pieds isn't a sure thing (or is it?). But considering that every het pied advertised includes a belly shot, it must not be THAT far fetched. I was just wondering what some people's experiences are with hets that are less than 100%ers. Is the pattern also any sign or just the stripes on the belly? I've seen some that have that "jigsaw" type pattern that resembles a Pied. Seems like that's a good clue. Anyway, any opinions on what the chance of these 2 proving out are? Or do I just have to do the "breed them and find out" thing? I don't personally find Pieds all that attractive but they would be fun to see pop out of an egg. I'm just not sure if I should take a chance on one of these guys and invest in a het female or not. ANY opinions are really appreciated. Thanks alot in advance. Ryan.

Here's the '02. I think his pattern says something but his belly stripes aren't all that strong.

This '03 looks nicer, but not Piedish patterned, more of a stripe in the center of belly, not sides. By the way, the first one is in deep shed. That's why he's so dark. Thanks again.

My 100% pied from Ralph does not have the "markers". Good luck with yours!

If you are going to purchase a 100% het pied female don't waste her trying to prove out some 50%ers. For $300 pick up a 100% het male to go with her - go for the sure thing!

Oh - as far as reliability on the markers - well - I don't hold a lot of stock in them. But I guess if you were going to buy a possible het, it'd be nice to have them there.

But that's my opinion I've been known to be wrong!

This is the first year we have produced pieds and het pieds. We are also producing 50% poss hets as well again this year. Of the 50%ers we are finding some snakes with markers and some with none. The same can be said for our hets as well. As a matter of fact I have had 2 clutches of hets (pied X poss het) with no markers at all. I did prove out one poss het so far this year and she did have a marker. It'll be a few years before I can prove whether or not all our poss het markers are actual hets.

Hope this helped.
