Aquiring a Ball Python

kepdi Jul 14, 2003 12:51 PM

I have recently been researching pythons and plan on buying one but was wondering whether if it is safe to get one mail order or to find someone near me to buy from. I would prefer to buy from a breeder (instead of a pet store) near me so i can see the snake and all that but just doesn't seem as if there are any near the Orlando area. I also don't want the animal to get stressed under flight conditions or even worse, arrive dead. Can anyone help me with this?

Here is a link to the Central Florida Herpetological Society. I'm not from Florida, and you might want to check online a little more thoroughly than I did, but they meet monthly in Orlando, and I'm sure they would have a good idea of where to get high-quality snakes. You could probably give them a call and get a good tip on where to go, and maybe join the society; local experienced herp people are always good to know.

Hope that helps,
Baz

Most breeders have a arive alive policy, and they don't get TOO stressed from shipping. There are ALOT of good breeders that sponsor this site, I would check them out. I like ordering from people I talk to alot on line so I know I can trust them somewhat. You can REALLY get jipped even if you look at the animal. I would buy from someone who has refreences. If you look at an animal that is WC or CH and they lied to you and said it was CB you would most likely not even know and could end up with a healthy looking animal with internal parasites. I would make sure they were responsible. Good luck! I have some people I could refer you to if you e-mail me, or you could wait untill next year and buy from me !

i bought a ball from petco (first python) and its awesome. its in very good health, eats mice whenever it sees one and is very active (some out everynight at the same time, and cruises around for 4 hours, then gos back, he comes out if hes in a dark room too) if you cant find a dealer, do what i did and go to petco and ask where they get their pythons from. pick out a snake you like and ask to see it eat, offer to pay for the food. if it does, then its your choice to get it, if it doesnt, ask to see another one.

Have you considered adopting from a rescue organization? If you're looking for a particular bloodline or morph, it's not the best choice, but if you're just looking for a nice normal to have as a pet or a breeder, it can be very rewarding. My boyfriend and I have two gorgeous BPs (one a normal female, one an amazing reduced/tiger pattern male that was just total luck) that we adopted through a local museum - their owners just didn't want them anymore, so they came to the museum and "donated" them. Since the museum didn't have a place for them, we took them home. Also, you could check newspaper ads. Kingsnake has listings of some rescue organizations; do a Google search and you may turn up others. Give it a thought; you could mean a whole new life for a particular BP.

If you dont mind a little trip and a bit of a wait, head to the National Reptile Breeders Expo in Daytona this August. I'm sure there will be tons of little BPs there for ya to pick through. Plus, its just fun!

My name is Mike Wilson. I live in St. Petersburg FL., not too far from Orlando. I have been breeding ball pythons for about 5 years now. All of my babies that I sell are true captive bred and born. I have some left from last year and I just hatched out 2 more clutches this year. I have some adds running in the classifieds section now. You can give me a call if you want.
