what?

I have resently sold all my reptiles, and started a small scale animal rescue. Anyway, I was looking at the monitor classifieds and noticed an add for salvators. It was from H&R reptiles. These were obviously fresh imports. They are very skinny. They want $125 each for them. I do not have a problem with this business. I am merly using them as an example. What the heck has happeded to the water monitor market? There used to be ch, cbb, and even well aclimated waters. Now they are all fresh imports. I hate this. Most of the waters are wc, and dont even have a chance to live healthy lives. Usually people get them on an impulse buy...I know I have. These are extremly large and dangerous animals that require a life long comitment. I know a kid that buys babys and sells them when they get too big. I am disqusted with all the waters that are for sale in the states. More people need to start breeding them, but not on a large scale. There are too many waters that are not fed properly, because the owner cant offord it. Waters need to be more rare in herpeculture. They sell for very cheap, get HUGE, eat a ton, take up a LOT of space, and are somewhat difficult to "tame" (unles you know what you are doing)...so why are they so cheap? I am sorry for making this soooooo long, I just needed to vent. and by the way I am going to get a pair soon and sell what I produce for $200 shipped each! But I will make to buyer write me a small care sheet, to prove to me that they know what they are doing. Let me know what you think of this idea, and have a good one.

You will do little buisness if you think people will write a care sheet for you or in other ways "prove" they know what they are doing. I do admire your intentions though.

Why would anyone (especially the careless & inexperienced) bother with cb & home work when it only costs them $99 to get an import. Yes I have seen them that cheap.

So many of the people that want waters in the first place want them for the wrong reasons. They want to have the biggest, baddest herp on the block. You know the "billy bada$$" syndrome. They certainly aren't going to take the time to write you a paper & pay $200 when there are cheaper & easier options available.

Pro Exotics and a few others are selling high quality ch babies. There are a few folks out there including myself that are / or in my case will breed them on a small scale when we can. To be honest with you uscb usually go for about $250 but I don't know how high the demand is. Again it's just too easy to get the wcs.

I wish you lots of luck both with the rescue & the waters. Hopefully you can make a difference.

By the way is that yoshi??

Here are my adult waters Waddi and Morrisa.

How is your breeding project going with them?

Gene Jul 15, 2003 09:05 AM

Yup, that's Yoshi.

My breeding project is moving slow honestly. I have them seperated at the moment since one of my other females was killed in the group. I later found out that a group may not be the best set up for my waters. I will try introductions from time to time and let the remaining two get / stay aquainted. I don't think they have any problems with each other. I had noticed that feeding had dropped off with them. Later I found out they had pin worms. I have treated accordingly and their appitites are soaring again so anytime now we will see how it goes.

I have to get off my butt and build an incubator first before I can have any eggs. Fortunately that is not too far off. (the incubator). We have a little hovabator but that is really just for my wife's gecko eggs & maybe my corn snake eggs when they reach maturity or until I build a nice one which ever comes first.

You have some very nice waters. Are you breeding them currently?

I am really enjoying monitors, I am just not in a great hurry to breed them. I fear where or what might happen to the little ones if I can even sell them. They might just take up permanent residence and eat me out of house & home.

See ya later.

Sorry about the female. I can tell you that my males are rough on the females as well. Not to that extent but I had to trim my big males nails as he shredded the females back and legs trying to breed her. He also either got his nail or bit her right front leg and left a nice gash in it. They have since been seperated so she can heal up. But they were not raised together and the female has not seen another monitor all her life until now that she is in my care.

My other pair is just 4 foot the male was rescued and is missing part of his front leg. The female thats in with him is perfect and was looking very gravid but nothing so far. They get along fine and he seems alot nicer to her but then again he is also not as big as my large male.

I agree it is hard to determin whether breeding them or not will be the right thing to do. I guess until people are more educated about them and understand them they will continue there ways.

Good luck on the incubator I just started building my new one and it is yet to be finished LOL

Thanks Gene. That is true (the paper thing). I just dont want to sell to the wrong people. Do you have any suggestions on what to do? Should I just sell them for $200 shipped? I also dont want to ruin the "reptile economy" if you know what I mean.
Thanks, Jed Hassfeld

If I had realized it was you I would have been a smarta$$ for sure. How the heck are you?

Michelle is kind of right. If Bloodbat, Chris C, you, or I can breed any at all and do our best to make sure they get to the right type of home it will make a small difference. I don't think it will effect the over all trade because my understanding of that is the "skin" trade is doing more damage than the pet trade to waters.

It is sad & I wish you the best in your efforts. I too will try to make a difference eventually but I just don't see many people gunning to buy high dollar cb Malaysian or Sumatran Salvators. I would of course but I am somewhere between anal & obsessive complusive when it comes to my animals.

I tried to sell a couple of cb argus I have but the market is flooded and the price is dropping. I only got calls from the "bada$$" gallery or the people who wanted to haggle me to less than half what I paid for them. It is not worth it to me. I will just keep them and raise them. Better they have a home and do okay than end up with the highest bidder and get fed dog food or something.

See ya later Jed.

Hey there! I am good, and you? I sold ALL my herps. I got a new truck blew up the engine, and lost my job because I had no transperation! Its a nice truck though...pretty to look at. I had to sell Gizmo (my beloved blackthrought), but he got a GREAT home. I found a guy that works in a petshop and wanted to get a reptile, and loves monitors. I sent him a 4 1/2 page care sheet on care and how to built trust and have a very handlable monitor. Well, thats enough about me...how are your herps? Have you gotten any new ones? Email me sometime @: monitors4you@hotmail.com
Thanks, Jed

That exactly what this world needs more of. Do it. I have all the faith in the world that you can be successful. You will make a difference.
There was a man walking along the seashore. Upon this seashore were millions of starfish that had washed up, and were dying. He steadily walking along, picking them up and tossing them back to the sea. Another man came walking along and asked the first man,"what in the world are you doing? You cant possibly make a difference all by yourslef." The other man smiled, bent over, and tossed another little starfish into the ocean. He then replied,"I just did".

My salvators are breeding again right now. Will have more eggs in about mid-August. I have a few eggs hatching in September and quite a few hatching in late December or early January.

You will get very few people willing to prove anything to you. You will get a few nasty comments about your attempt to get proof they know what they are doing. Also, some of those who respond will know how to take care of them but will be unwilling to do so long term. Most people will buy the cheaper, more disposible WCs.

Thanks Bloodbat! I apriciate your advice. I would really not mind the nasty comments.
