Male bored with the ladies?

some_lizard_guy Jun 21, 2005 09:06 PM

My male has lost interest with the female dragons I wish to breed him with... The first time I introduced him to them, he went insane with head bobs and a black beard, they were very receptive with arm waving, but they still never mated... About 6 weeks later, I tried seperating the male for nearly 2 weeks... He is now back with them, but hasn't even shown a black beard... Any ideas about how to renew his interest??? I have never heard of anything like this and have no idea what to do...

could it be that its not breeding season? in that the females are not 'ovulating' ?

i know one thing that usually works but you need to have two males. you just show the one you want to breed the other one. then he'll get all competitive and usually ends up with the results you are looking for.

maybe try some viagra....LOL

I thought of that, but then why do so many dragons in captivity breed without any brumation at all, or breed out of season? I know it is a little late for breeding, but I tried earlier, and, although he showed at least *some* interest, he never mated! Maybe he is just picky...

Hmmmm...

Since you dont have another male perhaps you could use a mirror to show your male his reflection? they dont know the difference and he may think there is another male there and will kick into breeding mode. If that doesn't work i guess maybe its just not the right time and u could wait and try again next year

Believe it or not, I have tried using a mirror too. It seems as if I have tried everything... Maybe I will just have to wait another year.

Don't give up, I disagree that it's past the season. My beardies have only started breeding this week and I have successfully bred in to August before. If the two male thing isn't working then try this. Put a spot light, I use one of the basking lights and find a place where it can hang down and cause a bright, warm light on the floor (but don't make it to low where it will burn any carpet) Make the room completely dark other than that spot light. Place the female that you want to breed in the center of the light and place the male off to the side in the dark area.

I read this in the bearded dragon manual and thought it was nuts but sure enough it seems to stimulate the male and that's how I get a stubborn male to breed. Hope this helpls.

Believe it or not I believe I have the same manual as it recommends that in the back. I already tried that a few days ago with no luck, but I will probably try again in a couple of days though...
