Crystal ball Theory... Long Shot, but with lot's of thought put in....LONG READ

slshaw Jun 21, 2005 11:25 PM

After seeing the incredible new animal produced by tom baker, I decided to really think about what could have produced such an awesome cross since tom will not release info on the mother. Some of you may not agree, but this is a forum so I am simply sharing my opinion based on a logical process I had using evidence from what we know about previous morph combos. The first and most important idea I had was that this snake had to have been produced by a mother that is capable of producing a white, silverish, or ivoryish super form that is somehow compatible with the white super form of the mojave. This being said I narrowed the selection down to the following possible crosses, or crosses produced by an animal similar to the follwoing morphs. We know that the follwing animals produce the above mentioned supers: mojave, lesser, platty, phantom, het ivory, fire, lemon ball, woma, pewter x's. I then decided I could eliminate the following possibilities because we have seen what they produce when crossed with mojaves or something similar: Lesser x (Blue Eyed Leucy), Platty x (ditto), mojave (blue eyed, lavendar head leucy). That leaves phantom, het ivory, fire, lemon ball, woma, and pewter x. I then eliminated pewter x because the cinnamon genetics would remove the yellow that is seen in the crystal (again this is all purely speculation, so if I get rude responses I will just consider you ignorant, as this is a non offensive opinion). That leaves Ivory, fire, lemon ball, phantom, and woma. I decided that in order to further eliminate options I would consider the second most important characteristic of the crystal ball and that is its pattern. This had me stuck for a bit, but upon reviewing NERD's Post sharing their cinnamon spider I found a clue. the mojave and cinnamon patterning are bother very similar, and both super forms creat a patternless snake. Both morphs have a floating, almost upside down triangle pattern, that is heavily repeated an sometimes connected. This being said, when NERD crossed the cinnamon with the spider (a VERY dominant pattern) we saw how subdued it was by the cinnamon pattern and. The resulting snake still had a very different and irregular pattern, one somewhat similar to that of the crystal ball (use you imagination here and fill in the color). Now obviously there was no spider involved, but one of our possible candidates shares many characteristic with the spider, and that is the WOMA. Also, the woma produces a pearly white snake with some greyish color on it's back. I do not think the crystal ball is the result of a yellowbelly x with mojave because ralph davis produced a phantom x yellobelly and it was not a white snake or anything close to the crystal ball. I am not saying the mojaveand phantom are the same thing, I am merely saying they are similar, so this is why i eliminated it from the possibilities. Finally, the crystal appears to have blueish blackish eyes and they pearl from what i've seen has similar eyes. In summation I think the Crystal ball is a cross between a mojave and a woma type (not necessarily a woma) because its shows that irregular pattern struggle like noted above, carries compatible whiteish/lavendarish, pearly genes, has simialr eyes color to the woma super, and if you REALLY think about it, how far fetched is it that Tom has a nice womaish animal that he picked up as an import and has been waiting to prove out. WE see tons of womaish animals coming into the country every year and while they don't all prove...if this one is indeed a woma or something similar...it proved. Sorry for the long post, but I felt the need to put that thought process in type, and who knows...maybe it's a good guess. Tom will enlighten us soon enough.

Seems to make sense to me.
BUT, we must also rule in the possibility that the mother is a new morph that just so happens to be compatible with mojave.

Agreed. Sorry I forgot to mention that in the post...got tired of typing... LOL. Time will tell.

Whoa... Someone has done alot of thinking about this Crystal!!! I must say that the conclusions you have come to are very well thought out, but... I can tell you that the mom is not a yellow belly, phantom, woma, or any other known morph that is out today (at least as far as I can tell it resembles nothing). It is a special looking normal that would not really stand out or be a snake that someone would try and prove out. She definitely is something special though and I really want to try and get to the bottom of this. I am not going to release photos til I have a better understanding of what is going on. Out of 4 eggs I ended up with a Crystal, Mojave, Normal, and a very strange Mojave that I will be posting photos of right now in a new thread. Let me know what you think...

Then I guess we won't know until the crystal ball is bred to mom (if it's a male)
But I can't wait to see!!!

toshamc Jun 22, 2005 12:23 PM

Dam - I was thinking it was a mojave spotnose cross (LOL).

Can't wait to see the mom! Have you bred her to anything else yet or plan to?

Congrats again!
