Hopeless?

I just recently got a btm from a friend who could'nt take care of it good enough. He was about 12-18 inches when he first bought him in july of 04 and now hes at least 3 ft. He is growing fast, eating well, and has good coloration and has a healthy weight. the problem is he is very flighty. He will not try to bite but he will his alot and ocasionaly whip and he squirms until he finaly settles down and sleeps on me (this usualy takes about 5-10 minutes.) So what i was wondering was if it would be possible to let him realize that im not going to eat him and make him enjoy coming out of his cage. I have heard u cant do it but i have seen many tame monitors and i dont see why he wouldnt want to come out and walk around. Sry for such a long post and i apreciate all your help.

I took in an 18 inch blackthroat awhile back that was in horrible shape. Malnurished, calcium deficency, dehyderated, and a badly kinked tail.
If he didn't lose part of his tail, he would be close to 5 feet.
He doesn't trust people and from his previous experience, I don't blame him.
I am happy he no longer charges or hides when the cage door is open and will stay out longer.
I am not trying to tame him. I am just doing my best to give hima better life. Well as good of a life as he can have living in a box.
Trust is coming along slowly and I am willing to let him choose the time he will come to me if he ever does.
Take things slow and let the animal decide.

In my personal opinion you shouldn't try to get your monitor to sleep on you, just isn't for monitors. But, if you want a lovey monitor I would first try to get his trust without holding him and forcing him. Such as let him come to you when you open his cage and such. Then go from there.
