Anyone buy crix online?

yellowfox Jun 22, 2005 11:32 AM

I've been looking into it. There was a banner on this site for www.americancricketranch.com i checked it out and very good prices. Problem is they don't have any shipping prices. They say they will add it to your cost at the time of shipping. That could basically make it worth buying or not.

Anyone have any suggestions? I am paying $7 for a 100 plus tax right now......

Forget crickets.....get roaches!! I have several lobster roach colonies that I use to feed my dragons. They love them and dealing with roaches isn't as bad as you would think. They don't stink like crickets and you can keep them confined to a rubbermaid container with vaseline or bug-stop. They reproduce so quickly that I haven't had to buy feeders in almost a year and I have 4 adult beardies. They get silkworms occasionally for variety, but they really like the roaches!

hmmmm i was reading about lobster roaches. I might check into that.

What are you feeding them and what are you housing setups for them? I might be interested in that. Do they get large?

I'll post a pic when I get home tonight of my colonies. I have lobsters mostly, but also a small colony of discoids. (the discoids can't climb glass) They are kept in large rubbermaid containers with a hole in the lid with a screen. The bug-stop or vaseline is spread around the inside of the top of the container and they can't crawl past. You can buy "roach food", but really they just need a high protein diet and will eat almost anything. I make a mixture of high protein dog food and non-medicated chicken mash, it's pretty cheap and lasts a long time. You can use any water cubes you use for crickets or apples for moisture. The adult roaches have wings on their backs, but they can't fly. I only feed the juveniles that look like big beetles, that way the adults continue to reproduce. The adult lobsters are about one inch, not very big. The discoids are much bigger, but I just feed the babies. It took a little getting used to, but now I have no problems handling them.

I thought it wasn't a good idea to feed BD roaches because they don't chew their food enough. i guess if the roaches are the size of crickets then their is no problem.

Oh i can't wait to see the look on my girlfriends face if i were to bring home roaches....LOL

They're price is $10 for 500 crickets which is awesome then they said it would be $15.55 to ship them..... So now i'm at .05 each which is a savings but not much, especially having to buy 500 each time. Some will probably outgrow my beardie
