silicone for vivarium setup

sutorherp1 Jun 22, 2005 11:51 AM

I bought GE Silicone 2(II) 100% silocone sealant (clear) to be pumped/applied through a caulking gun. I was told and read in many places that 100% silicone sealant is the best to use. I need to repair a crack or two in the bottom of a tank (I am sandwiching a plexiglass panel to it) and sealing the coconut fiber mats to the walls of the encloser. Upon reading the back of the bottle, it says "NOT FOR:.............., aquariums." Would this still be ok for my project since none would come in contact with the frogs themselves? People use liquid nails on plants and such structures needing mounting. I would think if the silicone cured like it should over 24 hours that it would be ok. I have not used it yet.; should I use it and be caeful it would not come in contact with my living animals or should I completely ditch it? Has anyone used such silicone, and if so could you tell me if it says its not for aquariums? Thanks,
-Sean

hmmm...never heard a tube saying that on it. Does it have mildew blockers in it? Those can be bad.

Nah; I read that a few brands of GE say that because similar products are sold in bulk to aquaring suppliers to be sued as aquarium sealent. The only reason (other than that) would be because it was not meant for glass, which isn't what I used it for anyway. It is without any additives and cured very fine. Thanks for input.

Not meant for glass? I always use it on glass.

For some reason, this sealant had not had glass listed, while all the other GE silicone sealants have "glass: 7" for ability to hold. I don't know, I used it for mounting PVC, and went out and got stuff better for the purpose (also GE).
