double clutch question

carl3 Jul 14, 2003 01:30 PM

In another forum, someone was comparing corn snakes to another snake. They said that their corns can produce 2 clutches of 25 eggs/babies each (for a total of 50 offspring in one year). Is that possible? Wouldn't that be poor husbandry to put a corn snake through that kind of stress? I have bred corns before but never double clutched for the simple reason of letting my corns regain health/strength. It's not that I disagree with double clutching or think there is anything wrong with it, if its done correctly. Plus, aren't double clutches usually smaller in size w/smaller percentage of viable eggs...yes/no?

Or is the person that replied to me over EGGsaggeratng (lol) with 50 babies from one female in one year.

My female double clutched this year. Results are first clutch:10 eggs 5 slugs and 1 went bad this week. None have hatched yet. Day #58. Second clutch: 18 eggs all appear fertile, day # 7. This is the first time I have tried double clutching.

it is possible but not likely to get 50 good eggs. i usually get 30-35 good eggs out of a double cluth.
