My son rescued a small 1.5inch box turtle from his teacher. She was not aware of there needs to be honest I was and still may not be as well. We were able to get the little guy eating and looking good until now. He has what appears to be an abscess on the side of his head. Any information as to what this is and how to treat would be appreciated.

www.billsboxturtles.com has a good page on lancing the abcess if you have the stomach for it, but if you are new to turtles I'd recommend a vet visit. He might need special antibiotics only a vet can proscribe. Tess Cook has a great site for box turtle care - I think it's www.boxturtlesite.com. Good luck, and let us know what happens!

Get it to a vet... if its that small it will need an experienced hand. Also, it may not necessarily be an infection at all.
I have an adult male eastern who required more than one kind of antibiotic (plus surgery) to get rid of his infection.
Good luck!
