BPs curling up into a ball... is it that effective?

nightserpent Jun 22, 2005 09:50 PM

As many know, a natural defense of a BP is to curl up into a ball. Is that really effective? The scales on a BP's back don't seem particularly thick (not like an armadillo, for example). We all know how easy it is for a rodent to bith through a snake's scales. Does anyone see this practice being terribly effective in te wild?

Perhaps I am missing something in the way it is used.

Could it be a method of protecting its head?? That's what I've always taken from it... They make it a point to burry their head.. Just my 2 cents

True, the head must be the most delicate and vulnurable (eyes, heat pits, etc). It just seems like the attacker would still be able to do a number on the body, and fending it off with bites/strikes seems like it'd work better.
