Info on 5-lined skink?

IDreamMyLifeAway Jul 14, 2003 02:24 PM

Hi I'm new here

I found a tree frog a few months ago. I put him in one of my 10 gallon tanks with rocks, sticks, etc. He eats crickets quite fine. Last week I found a 5-lined Skink (its also called a blue tailed skink) in my shed. I planned on getting another cage for him but I was wondering if they can co-exist together in one cage? They are both in the 10 gallon for now and seem to be doing fine.

I'm also not sure how to care for a 5-lined skink. Amazingly enough, I can't find anything on keeping these guys on the internet or in books. The only things I know is from observing him, is that he likes the light and to bathe in it (I have a hood light on the top of the cage) and he likes to dig. I'm not sure if he is eating my crickets or not, I haven't seen him eat any and my frog gets to them first anyway.

So does anyone here know where I could find info on my skink? Maybe even my tree frog? I haven't been able to identify him ethier. Or if the skink and frog can even live in the same cage or not ?

Thanks

Minimum vivarium size should be 36"x18"x18" for one specimen.
Use a melamine coated wooden viv with a glass sliding door at the front.

As a substrate, use a moisture retentive foam of leaf litter covered with moss.

Give them plenty to climb on, use cork bark for shelters on the ground and try using some live plants, as they like a humidity of around 55-60%

Use UVB light. 72F at cool end, 88F at hot spot. 65F at night.
Photoperiod: 12 hours

Winter temp should be around 55F for 8 weeks, with a photoperiod of 6 hours.

Feed on dusted insects, fruit and vegetables. Pinkie mouse can be given once every two weeks. Provide a small piece of cuttlefish bone for calcium. They are omnivorous, so eventually, the frog will possibly be eaten.

Hope this helps

I've never kept skinks, but have found them occasionally in the wild. They tend to be bitey little guys. Depending on how large your frog is, he may be at risk. However, I have in the past kept very small tree frogs with a medium sized lizard, the Flying Gecko. My flying gecko ate my brown anole, but he didn't eat my 3/4" hyla crucifer (spring peeper).

My theory is that when the spring peeper was moving at all, it was moving at the speed of light, and so the gecko didn't see him. The way the gecko hunted was to see prey, look at it further for confirmation, then sneak up on it and look for movement for final confirmation.

The gecko wasn't likely to ever really make it through his whole eating ritual with the treefrog, because he'd never know where it jumped to.

I haven't observed the eating ritual of the skink well enough to know.
