P. barbatus as a food source

wmerker Jun 23, 2005 02:50 AM

Is Pogonomermyx barbatus an acceptable food source for horned lizards? I am working with Phrynosoma modestum, but I thought they might go for P. barbatus, as they are native to the same areas. Any other ideas as to which ants (from west Texas) are appropriate for P. modestum would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Any of the Pogonomyrmex will work fine as a food source for any of the horned lizards.

Hi Lester,
Is there a trick to getting them to take different pogo's?
I have a DHL that will not eat rugosus but will eat californicus.
I have had little luck with getting SHL's to eat any pogo's on more than one or two occasions.
All others seem to take to anything I throw in the pen.
Thanks

barbatus and texanus are probably specifically what is familiar if your modestum are from Texas.
