Wild ALBINOs ?!?!?!

ericR Jun 23, 2005 03:42 AM

HELLO
A friend was working in my back yard the other day and found an "albino" garter
snake. I was not around but he knew I would be interested so he kept it for me. He
will be bringing it over tomorrow, now that I am back in town so I will try and get
some pictures to post. How likely does this seam? Also in are area I believe that
there are 3 common types: California Red Sided Garters (T. sirtalis infernalis),
Western Terrestrial Garters (T. elegans terrestris), and Aquatic Garter Snakes(T.
atratus). Are any of these species available in the pet trade as albinos??? Has anyone ever found a wild albino?

thanks for any feedback, ericR

Hello!

I live in an area that we have 2 native types of garters. California Red-Sided, and Northwestern. I found an albino CA Red-Sided at a river by my house once. Was the only time i've found an albino snake int he wild. But morphs, and stuff liek that happen in the wild naturally at times. So I wouldn't doubt it was born in the wild and everything I live in Ukiah, it's in Mendocino County, CA. Where are you from?

hello,

You are not far away at all. The snake was found around Garberville in Humboldt County. Did you keep the albino red-sided garter you found?

I got the snake today and it is defiantly albino! I had to key it out to species but I ended up with an Albino Western Terrestrial Garters (T. elegans terrestris). It is a very nice snake and about 14 inches long. I will post pictures and soon as I can. Can you sex garters at that small of a size?

thanks, ericR

I would highly reccomend going to an expo or someplace where an experienced person can probe it. If the person finds any more and you don't want them, I do.lol. I wish you great luck with it and please take very good care of it. You should talk to Scott Felzer, if he has not read this.

I'm going to bet $5, that when Wildthing responds, he says the snake either got away, or died. Or if he still has it, I bet he says he can't get pics.

Definitely contact Scott about your albino. I'm sure he'd be mighty interested in it. And that's probably the best place for it.

And I'm going to bet $5 that you don't know what you're talking about. I never said I kept it, I said I found one once, rerring to in the past. Referring to when I was like 12 yrs old...and it never died, and I couldn't take pics because #1 we didnt have digi cameras then, #2 I never kept snakes then, and #3 It didn't even some across my mind to keep it

Hi everyone,

When my dad was very young, he found a wild albino eastern, with a very silverish color, in a small Ohio town. I think it was something like the 11th ever found at the time.
