Does anyone know anything about mangrove monitors?

OneTwoManyHerps Jul 14, 2003 02:45 PM

A freind/breeder I know, has a mangrove monitor and says he'd sell it to me for $100. Thing is I don't know much about the lizard and can't find much either. He says that it is 2' long right now and is kinda wild (temperment). If anyone has had expirience with this monitor to were you could let me know know about its behavior, habitat, and adult length that would be GREATLY appreciated.

There is a book available at most book stores(you may have to order it) by Daniel Bennett that will give you great info. on these guys. But honestly in comparison to the species you currently have I'd say don't get it as they are not beginner species unless you just want a diplay animal. They can get about 31/2 - 4ft. But may stop at the current size if a WC. They usually are high strung the require plenty of hide spots. They like to climb, swim, eat. The list is to long. Try a LTC dumerils, albig. species,or sav. before getting a mangrove.

Mnagroves are neat, crazy little monitors. In my experience they have been skittish, but not to the extreme that your average Timor is. Mine borrow extensive tunnels, and stay in them a lot of the time. They are pretty easy keepers and only eat a few mice every couple days. They like it nice n humid, with a good sized watering area. Mine love crawfish n other water critters, but will eat almost anything readily.
They are pretty active, and will climb if given the opportunity. My next enclosure for them will be upright, 8' tall x 4-6' wide(havent decided yet).I want it to be able to house three, as I plan on adding another female by the end of the year.
As far as the rest of it, its pretty much the same as any other monitor...proper temps, basking, hides, etc.
