Double Clutching: Definitions & Techniques

CJBianco Jun 23, 2005 10:50 AM

Hello, Everyone.

I have heard people speak about double clutching in Pueblan Milksnakes. What exactly is this? I mean, I've read that once the females lay eggs that the breeder places the male in with her again. But I've bred Russian Toroises before that laid a second clutch without any (observed) second copulation.

Is the second copulation necessary, or do the females store sperm for a second clutch?

Thanks,
Chris

I have doubled, tripled my campbells numerous times. I even did it a 4th time with one female. When the 1st clutch is about 2 - 3 weeks away, the female will be put back with a male. The female must be back to her original weight or close to it, otherwise you risk losing her. I've never had a female double with sperm retention, but some folks have.

I find that rat pups pump up a female faster so she ovulates in time.

Last year, I had a female dbl het ghost that bred with a male dbl het ghost for her first clutch. She dropped 11 eggs for the first clutch. It was her first year breeding, and she had used alot of weight to produce the first clutch. I didn't want her to double clutch, so I didn't breed her. She had other ideas and ovulated. She laid another clutch of 7 eggs of which only one was good. But lucky for me, out of that one egg popped. . .( see pic below :D )

p.s. I'm waiting for this same female to shed and drop her clutch of eggs for this year. . .she is extremely bloated with eggs and no longer opaque. She dropped on 6/12 last year guess she is a little late this year
