Can anyone tell me what is requiered to go into Nevada to collect unprotected reptiles and bring them back to california for a private collection? I have been searching the NDOW site all mornign and still can say for sure but it would seem they are suggesting I dont need a permit or anything go go over there, catch them and bring them home as long as they are not protected and they are only for private use. Thanks in advance.

Jason,
When I applied for a Nevada scientific collecting permit to potentially conduct research on the Rubber Boa in that state, I received a letter with the following sentence:
"Nevada law does allow a person to collect and possess two per year of the species listed on the enclosed list; therefore, you are authorized to collect and possess two rubber boas per year without a permit."

The list can be obtained from the Wildlife Diversity Bureau, Nevada Dept. of Wildlife, 1100 Valley Road, Reno, Nevada 89512 Their phone # is 775-688-1500

As to how the state of Calif. treats the importation of herps is another ball game altogether. I suspect that situation is full of contradictions and controversy. Perhaps there are others that can provide you with information dealing with that subject.

I got a letter back from the NDOW which included a list of species I can legally track, collect and transport however in order to remove them from the state I must drive all the way to Fallon and get an export permit. The nice little lady with the NDOW told me I must only apply for the permit after the individuals are collect as it will only be filled out for those individuals and every time I wish to remove any species from the state I must apply for a new Exportation permit. Bummer but it’s the law

I live in Nevada and the state does require a nongame license to collect any reptiles. They cost around 5 or 10 dollars if I remember correctly. I should remember as I renew it every year as it is also required to posses any native species. A commercial license cost around 100 dollars. What do we have in Nevada that you can’t find in California? Most of our species are also found in California.
