Does Snake Poop have urates?

Neverland Dragons Jun 23, 2005 02:05 PM

Hi-

Does snake poop have urates like a lizards? Or, is it easy to tell the difference? I have never owned a snake. A lady emailed me asking about some droppings she found inside by her door. She is thinking they are either snake or lizard poop. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes. Snake kidneys absorb much of the water, and the uric acid is transformed into much more soluble urea (or is it the other way around..) Anyway, the urates are solid, whitish or yellowish and chalky looking and come out with the rest of the waste matter.
