Hello Nick;
People might have been put off by your phrase "actual good advice". I can give you advice, but we have raised only one iguana, and we didn't use the traditional "Mellisa Kaplan" way, or even the "James Hatfeild" way. I have both of those books. The results, however, are also not typical. We have a 4 year old female iguana, named Iggi. We have raised her from an iglet of about 6 mounts old. She has never bit us, tail whipped us, or deliberately scratched us. This is good, because we also have never trimmed her nails. We take her outside every day for sunshine and exercise. She needs no leash. We take her with us when we go on vacation. She is excellent around strangers. She is a free roamer now for 3 1/2 years. She has her own bed, in her own bedroom. How did we tame her? Well, it's easy in principle, but hard in practice. We treated her like one of our own children. We carried her around almost all day long. We would talk to her, sing to her, pet her and kiss her. Gasp! What about Samonella! If Iggi had any, we would all be dead by now. We would put her in her enclosure to poop, and to sleep. After about 6 months, she would stand up on the driftwood, and hold her arms up for us to take her out. We decided to put up a floor-to-ceiling cat tree, and make that her bed. We threw out the enclosure, and she has been a free roamer ever since. Between the bathing and walking outside (always supervised), and food preparation, it takes about as much time as raising a toddler. That's what I meant about "hard in practice". My wife gives Iggi attention practically 24 hours a day. Even after she has tucked her into bed at night, she will still get up and check on her during the night. Sometimes Iggi pulls off her blanket with her long back toes. After 4 years of raising her like a daughter, she still looks like a green iguana, but she acts more like a human daughter than an iguana. If you have the time and patience, and love, you too can have a gentle sweet iguana. Here is a picture of my wife and Iggi.
