Got two German Giants, or so I was told... How do I know for sure?

sacredpurr Jun 23, 2005 05:42 PM

They arrived two days ago on a trade I did. They are the normal Coloration with some yellow around the eyes and head and not too much black in the pattern. Kinda bland, but don't get me wrong they are nice dragons. The male and female are about 20 months old I was told and I would say they are 348 grams, 22 inches long for the male and 24 inches long and 406 grams for the female) I was told the female is Het for Pastel. Please let me know if the weight sounds good for the size and also any features that would help me tell if they are indeed GG. I plan to breed on a small scale so I want to learn all I can. I am an experienced reptile owner/breeder, but new to beadies. Also I bought a little gem. a citrus/sandfire cross. How soon can I tell its sex. I can kinda see pores now and he/she is 10 weeks old. But they are faint. I am interested in getting one or more of the opposite sex to raise up with it so the sooner I can tell the better. The books I am reading really don't tell how early you can tell their sex just thats its hard to do. Thanks for any advice you can give.

you usually cant sex them until they are 6months to a year. 10 weeks is awfully young to have been sold, how long is it?

About 6-7 inches. I could be wrong on the age. I was looking at so many and I may have gotten the age mixed up. But it is eating fine and seems to be very healthy so far. I need to weigh it though. At what age is the best time to sell the babies? TX

The weights on your GGs sounds kinda light (i dont know if any one else has any input on this) but i have two 19" dragons that arre both easily above 400 grams. Dragons that are above 20 inches can get as heavy as 600-750 grams.

Thanks for writing. I kinda thought they were under weight myself. I was told they were in semi hybernation only a month ago. Sounded fishy but what do I know. I am feeding them good but of course it has only been two days. They love everything. Tomorrow my superworms, more crickets, waxworms ect are coming in but I have small crickets, mii mealworms and small mealworms here all the time because of other reptiles. What would be a good food source to help them gain weight? Thanks

The baby dragon is 8 inches and only 22 grams! But it is doing great since it's been here( Sunday I got him/her). Ay suggestions on this. At what age do you think it is?

WHy is everyone so concerned with weight? pinkies add fat, not good healthy weight. you should only feed pinkies to gravid females.

I have a female who will eat until she explods...while my male is a picky eater...he'll take like 3 crickets a day and only a little salad....where as the female eats like 20 crix and a bigger salad.

if you want your baby to grow faster...just feed it more times a day...i feed my babies like 5 times a day, and they grow like weeds

I have a german giant cross...they can get anywhere from 24" to 30" long...often GG's have less spikes around their heads, but not always, mine has the usual...check out Beautiful Dragons...their site gives a list of foods and their nutritional value...I wouldn't worry too much about fattening them up...if you are feeding them right and enough they should put on the weight naturally...most are little pigs...

I have a 3 year old German Giant female. She has a beautiful orange beard and yellow around the eyes. Her back has some yellow--but is pretty plain unless she is outside in the sun. She is just over 22 inches long and weighs around 600g.

If they are on the 'slim' side and you were told that they were in 'semi-brumation' then I'd make sure to get a fecal sample from both to the vet just to check.

My girl was a 'rescue'...her previous owners neglected her...she was VERY underweight (pelvis sticking out and you could easily see all of her ribs and NO fat in her tail base or fat pads on her head). Now she looks like a totally different dragon.

She is HUGE compared to our 18 inch Super Orange male. They are housed seperately...

Good luch with your new family!
