PLease, Please help

Lizardfreak89 Jun 23, 2005 06:39 PM

I am in tears as I write this post. My smaller male bearded dragon has become dangerously thin and wont eat or drink so Ive been forcefeeding him. He sits around all day and when I pick him up he just flops. He's acting dead, and wont EVER move. Please Help! I cannot imagine what life would be like without him. Please, any one with any information. PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME! Please... I will do anything. Im only 16, I do not want to see my beloved lizard die.

If he is acting that lethargic then i would say he is too far gone to do any home treatments and he really needs to see the vet. I would suspect parasites. How long has he been on the decline? If he is very thin he must have been getting worse for awhile, when did he stop eating?

A few things, its important to know the specifics of your lizard and his care:

How old is he?
Where did you get him?
what size tank is he in?
what are the temps (high and low)?
Does he have UVB light?
what do you supplement with?
What is the substrate?
What do you feed?
Is he housed alone or with other BDs?

Call the vet and make an appointment, explain to them how dire the situation is and they should get you in right away. Until then you can try giving him some pedialyte or diluted gatorade with an eyedropper to hyrdate him. You can also try some soaks in very shallow warm water, watch him and make sure his head stays above water. If he is housed with other lizards seperate him and keep him warm (basking spot of 100-110, general temps in the high 80's) You can try giving him some slurry of chicken baby food with vitimins and calcium mixed in with an eyedropper as well, but he really needs to see a good reptile vet asap.

He is
Almost 5 years old
calcium sand
housed alone
also in basking area
stopped eating 3 nights ago, but was declining around 1 week ago
I give him calcium and electrolizer stuff
he cant even sit up straight and wobbles as if he's dead, keeps his eyes closed until i hold him

Im so worried... all the vet clinics are closed and i had an appointment for tommorow but i dont know if hell make it through the night...

It could be the calcium sand you are using. That stuff tears their insides up pretty bad if it's ingested. Just so you know for the future...it's about the worst substrate you can use. Non-stick shelf liner is great to use. Also indoor/outdoor carpeting, paper towel, newspaper, tile. If you must use sand....washed, sifted, fine playsand is a far better option. I hope he makes it. Let us know.

Yes, he may well be impacted. When was the last time he pooed? Calci-sand is very dangerous. Support him over the night, keep him warm and hopefully he will make it for his vet visit tomorrow....good luck
