How to feed springtails to froglet?

MdkSniper May 17, 2003 10:31 AM

Hey, I just got a culture of springtails from Ed's Flymeat. The problem is, I don't know how to get the springtails out of the culture to feed to my imitator froglet. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
Mike

Insect aspirators work really well. If you want to spend about $16.00 to $20.00 you can check them out on http://www.roseentomology.com/insect-Aspirators.htm

Mine are on the charcoal/yeast, but if you're using sphagnum, Homer's way is probably better--and cheaper. I just have more fun with gadgets. You can put a pinch of the vitamin powder in the collecting container, is the only other advantage I can see with the aspirator.

I just add water to the culture, then using a turkey baster, suck up the water and the springtails, and put them in the tank.

That's basically how I do it. The only difference is that I keep my cultures in small deli cups, so I just flood the culture and pour out the water (with the floating springtails) into the tank.

I traditionaly just take a spoon full of the saphgnum out of the culture and put it in the tank.

I like using a medicine syringe(without the needle)because it allows me super good aim to place the food a little at a time right in front of each frog.

Congrats Mike,
I was wondering how they came out with their eggs and all. What I do is take my culture,a shoebox full of them, and tip it some so the springtails collect on top of the water and get a plastic spoon full and blow on them and they jump off into the shoeboxes I have the froglets in.Or if I'm in a hurry I just tip the cultur and blow into it and some make it into the shoebox.I usualy only feed them springtails for the first week then mainly melogasters,Hope this helps and good luck...........Mark W.
