Feeding on substrate: good or bad or does it matter?

kingsnake2 Jun 23, 2005 09:58 PM

I feed my snakes on their substrate that I have them on (crushed nut shell), is that ok? Can it hurt them, or is it likely to? If my snake had problemms with a peice of substrate stuck in the digestive system what would the symtoms be ike?

Depends on who ask. Personaly I have been feeding on substrate for over 30yrs. either aspen or pine shavings, never once had a problem. What I think is a concern is hatchlings eating pinkies. Most hatchlings I keep on paper towles until they get some size on them and they are big enough at that point any small amount of substrate that may be injested will just pass through.

I keep my babies on paper-towls to so that should be ok.

A few threads down there's a topic on substrate. From what I understand, problems are rare, but possible. The general consensus for minimizing risks seems to be to A. make sure the mouse's fur is dry and B. place mouse on 8x11 piece of paper or something similar thereto.
