uro's belly (help!)

alliwag May 17, 2003 10:34 AM

Can anyone describe to me (in as much detail as possible) what a uro's belly is supposed to feel like?
Mine has slowed down his eating quite a bit, although I have seen fresh poops in the cage.
I'm not sure if he's not eating because he is spooked (he saw my dog the other day, and has acted sort of skittish ever since) or if something is wrong. I held him in two hands, (he was right side up) with my palms up, thumbs on his back, fingers on his belly, and felt his belly a bit by squeezing (gently) with my thumbs and fingertips. I felt the backbone, and then on his right side, I didn't feel much of anything (soft) on his left flank however, it felt like there was something inside, like a rope.
I'm hoping and hoping that this is not a string of intestines that is blocked! Hopefully this is just a normal organ inside there?
Please let me know if I need to get out the syringe and the babyfood!!!
BTW- we also had a rash of cool, wet weather up here, and his cage temps were about 5 degrees cooler for a good 4 or 5 days as well...That might have made him a little sluggish.
Anyways, any ideas?
thanks
alli

I probably should have mentioned that he's also going thru a shed right now. His arms and legs and tail has shed, but his back is now shedding.
thanks

I've noticed mine sometimes eat less when they are shedding. What kind of substrate do you keep him on? When I told my vet I had a couple of uromastyx, she told me she sees them in there all the time badly impacted, especially if they are kept on sand.
