No. Read some of the substrate threads discussed here. Unless it's washed, sifted, fine playsand...don't use it. I don't like sand at all, but if you have to use sand...that's the only kind to use. You can get it at Home Depot for 3-5 dollars for a 50lb. bag. If it's a baby or juvi...don't use sand at all. Use non-stick shelf liner you can get at Wal-Mart, newspaper, paper towel, tile, indoor/outdoor carpeting...etc. Sand should only be used for adults and sub-adults over 12 in. in length, and even then, I don't believe it's completely safe.

Sand is generally a bad idea no matter what, it can cause impactions and also harbors bacteria and is extremely hard to keep clean.

If you still choose to use sand use it only on adult animals, sand should NEVER be used on juvis. And use only fine grain washed sifted playsand. No sand is digestable. You must also spot clean daily and do total cleans weekly with sand to try and eliminate bacteria, its very time consuming.

Some other substrates that are much safer and easier matinence are: linolium, tile, cage carpet, newspaper, paper towels, and non adhesive shelf liner
