When do you guys throw in a male for double clutching?

bluerosy Jun 24, 2005 06:04 PM

I usually wait a two days after the female lays then feed her as much as she can eat. As soon as she is done I throw in the male.

I am not sure when breeding actually takes place because I don't witness it. But feeding 5-10 mice after laying seems to help speed things along. Anyone know when follicles are developed (and why) in the female after the first clutch ?

I try n do the same thing. When my Hondo laid today I tried to feed her soon after and she was not interested. She eats a LOT all the time so as soon as she eats a belley full in goes the male again. If a week or more passes and a snake won't eat yet I put the male in. If he subdues an unwilling female they usually eat like crazy soon after. I think that the male can snap a drained female out of her delerium and get her back on track. I have had an infertile clutch or two from a female who did not want to eat much or breed after clutch number 1 and that is a bummer. Tom Stevens

I have a nice thayeri that laid a clutch on 6/15. I fed her 3 good sized mice that next day and so far she has eaten 8 mice. She definately putting on some weight but does not seem interested in breeding. I've left 2 different males in with her but have not observed them breeeding. I seen the males attempt to bred but she just does alot of tail whipping. Is that a sign that she may have retained sperm from the 1st breeding and is going to double clutch on her own?

What do you think guys should I just leave the male in with her for 4 or 5 days and hope they bred?

I would just leave the male in with her.

breed again starting maybe a week to two weeks after deposition of their first clutch; the others reject males until they've shed again, and then--a couple days to a week or so after that shed--start breeding for the second clutch. This pertains mostly to hondos but i think (hope) is acceptably applicable here on the ks forum.
