Male Desert Horned Viper (C. cerastes) just out of isolation and in with the "Big Momma" for the first time. He seems right at home resting on her coils.

Seldom do Sawscale Vipers let you get a nice shot of their head. My male E. c. sochureki is an unusual beast that is not skidish or overly defensive. He rides a hook nicely, sometimes too nicely when he slithers up it towards my hand. I let him out a bit for surpervised exploration of the Snake Room floor on occassion. I never disturb Egyptian Sawscales I have, they are too paranoid and flakey.

My Vipera a. ammodytes is a pig. I think he would eat till he exploded. Speaking of explosive, he has quite a nasty temper. He sounds like a little steam engine when he gets "huff'n'and puffing". He also strikes quite a bit and hit my camera lens more than once.

My little 6 gram/ 7 CM Vipera cerastes male has the honor of being the second male in with the dangerous but not lethal female. She has bit him and him predessor, just because she can I think. Here he reveals himself for the camera for a moment.

Al, what substrate is that and where did you get it? Did you see that pink Cerestes cerestes I posted on the wrong forum? It may be gravid? My brown may also be? Here is a pic just in case you missed it. I also have a longnose viper and need to post it soon. Mine also is a slob when it comes to eating and would eat every few days if I let it. I need to eventually pair it up. They have such neat personalities.

Dan:

This is what I use for all my Desert Snakes. It's easy to clean and the animals get along well in it. No problems with injestion. I buy it locally at like Petco, so I don't have to pay shipping. Nice pink DHV! I love the desert vipers, they are easy keepers and cool snakes too.

Cheers!

ESU Reptile Desert Blend Lizard Litter is a sand substitute developed for desert-dwelling reptiles. Made from ground English walnut shells, it is harmless if ingested in small quantities and will easily pass through the reptile's digestive system. It is non-toxic, less abrasive and dust free. Available in 5 lb, 10 lb, 25 lb and 50 lb sizes.

I think I see an eye about an inch down from the center?

I will check out that lizard blend stuff. I am a bit weary about walnut shell stuff because I know that particular stuff gets caught in the mouth/gum area of lizards and cuts through their skin in the mouths but since you said this stuff is less abrasive I will try it.

There is an eye just left & down from center. I have to use a hook as a "Mine Sweeper" when I go into that cage to find them sometimes. The female has been able to grab a FT Quail Chick 5 inchs off the substrate.

I think it's good stuff. I have not seen any evidence of oral abrasion in any of my snakes where that is used.

Best,
Al

Do you have any advice with managing eggs from this species? I have two gals I posted on another forum that may lay soon? Nice snake by the way.

Hi Chip

Yeah great job you got! I loved living in Tucson, where you could go out and find Really COOL animals. All is good here as I'm off the the Litiz Venomous show today. Never know what I might find there.

Best,

Al
