What kind of snake would be good?

surfdude660 May 17, 2003 10:46 AM

I have a breeding pair of corn snakes (common-carolina)right now and they are a joy. I am looking to buy another snake, preferrrably just one. I have several requiremants and am wondering if any of you could help me out. We have ctas, and my mother says no snakes that could kill them. I would like a snake that i can buy for under $200 and is colorful. The most important thing to me is that the snake will be personable and like to be handled. Does such a snake exist? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I had a ball python that i gave away that seemed to like to be handled, also i have a very large female cal king that i got from the same person that loves to come out and seems to like to be handled.but they raised them as pets and were always handling them. With enough "gentle"handling most snakes will like the warmth of some hands or an arm to stretch out on.Good luck with what you choose

An adult grey banded king snake would be a good choice and seems to meet your requirements. If you purchase one CB over 2 feet (which is mouse trained) it will cost anywhere from $100 to $150, I have a male blairs phase who loves to be held, has lots of personality, and wont get over 4 feet (I also have a cat). Also most milksnakes are colorful and in your price range however they tend to be jittery. Good Luck!!

A snake has to be BIG to eat a cat, and most snakes in the pet trade are under $200, and plenty are colorful. A rough estimate is that anything under 10 feet would be unable to eat a cat, unless it's a tiny cat. So stay away from Boa constrictor and the larger pythons and you'll be ok.
My inner psychic voice is telling me that you should look into Asian ratsnakes, specifically beauty snakes (E. friesi) and king ratsnakes (E. carinata).

I would recommend a kingsnake or a milksnake (Lampropeltis genus).

There are a wide variety of kingsnakes and milksnakes, many of which have very bright colors (like the tangerine honduran milksnake or an arizona mountain kingsnake). These snakes usually stay in the 3-5 foot range, with the occasional 6 foot specimen (depends on the species of course). They are usually quite docile if you handle them regularly, they aren't much harder to care for than a corn, and they won't eat your cats!
